Leaders, what can YOU control during a global pandemic?

You certainly can’t control the virus, and you can’t control government responses to the pandemic. You can’t control international markets nor national economies. You may not even be able to control if your business remains operational or is forced into ‘hibernation’. Unfortunately, right now, the list of things outside anyone’s control is enormous.

But there is one thing that you can control; your response.

You can decide to binge Netflix series and chase distractions on the internet or you can decide to invest in yourself.

If you choose, you can use this time to improve yourself. Learn something new, like drawing, cooking, writing, marketing. The possibilities are endless, and the online resources are plentiful. Linkedin Learning has hundreds of free courses ranging from mindfulness training to learning excel. Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is a global non-profit online learning platform. Schools and Universities from around the globe including Australian National University, Stanford and Oxford, offer free online courses in areas including computer science, the humanities and science and maths.

Those of us not working on a vaccine or in front line services such as hospitals and supermarkets, may be required to stay in our homes, but we are not required to sit idle and grow bored.

If you are a leader, now is the time to invest in your leadership skills. When this is over, organisations will need great leaders to successfully rebuild and thrive.

The post-pandemic world will need competent and compassionate leaders. Leaders with the time and the motivation to listen, inspire and empower staff to produce at optimal capacity. Leaders who act with integrity and manage underperformance quickly, effectively and with kindness. Leaders who know how to communicate to create a shared sense of purpose. Leaders who know how to lead teams to success.

If you are a leader in an organisation currently in hibernation, and you are confined to your home, you have a rare opportunity. There will be a lot of work to do in the rebuilding stage and the choice you make now may have a significant impact on your future.

For those working on a vaccine or in front line services, thank you. Your service is valued beyond words.
